In this video, I experiment with a product sold on the pyrodirect.com website. I tried to run the magnesium ribbon through the little hole in the can unfortunately it melted and sealed the hold and the fire did not pass. The thermite did light with standard Visco fuse. For more information on this project please visit the pyrodirect.com website

they use thermite to melt railroad tracks together for trains also the Mythbusters did a experiment thermite vs ice it will explode pretty good and just for fun they melted a car in half here is the links

it looks like something we use in the electrical field to ground with. it's called "exothermic welding". the trade name or product name is Cadweld and basically you do the same thing. a little bit of powder is emptied into a mold that goes around the wire you are bonding to structural steel. this powder will not ignite directly. you have to instead also dump a little bit of another igniting powder on top of that. once that powder catches the initial powder, LOOK OUT! it burns so quickly and so hot it looks like molten magma and can be very volatile if used improperly. I'm assuming the magnesium strip does the same thing as the ignition powder we use. check this video out. it's the first one i saw but demonstrates the basics:

unfortunately the guy is using a sparkler to ignite RIGHT ON TOP of the material. that is VERY DANGEROUS as you can see how volatile the material is right after ignition.
