Hey Guys,
I'm soon going to get hold of a 8 break 130mm Shell.
Now this is somewhat confusing to me, what the heck is a 130mm shell? I've looked it up in the web, but it didn't really turn up any results. It might be important to mention that the shell is made in Italy..
Do you reckon I need a special made mortar, or could I fire it from a 5"?
Kind regards,
Mikhail

Answered by Google:
130 mm = 5.11811"
Drop it in a 5 inch mortar and see if its too snug or too loose.

Ditto on the measurement conversion. A large multibreak shell like that most likely has a bottom shot---I would advise burying the mortar for safety. Let us know how you make out.

I heard the bottom shot was just a bunch of snap pops unwrapped and dumped into a large wad of paper for louder snap-pop-effect.........
Seriously though....good call

Hi there!
If it really is originally from Italy, then it probably really is 130mm, They have some unusual calibers there, 90, 110, 130, 160... When we first started with our partner company down there we had to switch a lot of their sizes around because at least over here a 130mm shell will usually not fit in a 5inch (125mm) pipe...
And are you sure it's an 8 break? Ok, it depend on how you define break, but I guess this shell is what is called a "Bomba Scala 8". It has 8 timed bombettes in it, so the shell only breaks once and ignites all the spolettes of the inserts :)

Fixed....but nonetheless something I totally overlooked. Obviously 130mm is bigger than a 5" or 127mm gun....

If it's a real 8 break 5" shell, containing 8 separate full sized breaks, you'll may want to look into a steel mortar too. I've seen much less destroy fiberglass and HDPE.

Well, yes, 127mm :) So that's the pipe. Over here the shell-calibers are, I mean what the bombs really are outside diameter, in mm 50, 65, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300, 400 :)

130mm is a normal size in Italian shells. 130mm mortar tubes can also be bought in Europe.
When shooting cylinder shells in this size, you can shoot from 130mm double enforced fiber tube, or steel.
Take a safe distance when shooting, because Italian shells some times maybe can have failures like BIP's.
And you won't stand next to an Italian 130mm when there is a BIP...
An Italian 8 break shell like you mean is most likely a "Studata" or "Scala Octa / Scala 8". (see Youtube)
