I got this bag of mystery material in a box with some other firework supplies at an estate sale, this is the only item that wasn't clearly marked and there is like 3 pounds of it so it would be nice to identify it rather than just throwing it away.
Color is red to rust brown, smells rather pungent like a resin or rosin of some kind, texture is brittle slightly porous. It was apparently fairly large chunks and has worked it's way into one big clump.
Under a torch flame it begins to melt and goes oily looking then burns and sort of looks like the world's slowest snake firecracker.
Realgar? Nitroanoline? Nozzle material? Maybe gum or adhesive of some kind?
At first I thought it may be some kind of star mix but it won't ignite it just melts and burns reluctantly under direct flame.
In water it remains grainy and brittle, doesn't appear to dissolve at all.
