This app definitely brings up some ASCAP questions. Personally being somewhat interested in pro sound, this isn’t very attractive.
There is a very robust 3rd party device and app for the professional side as well, you can also purchase music licenses through them as well.

"PyroCast" looks interesting. I don't want to run shows directly off my phone, but from what I've seen the ignite system may be convenient for some smaller shoots. I'm assuming such an app could be integrated for other systems, too... And some are already out there. This "PyroCast" app sounds similar to MusicSync apps by PyroMac (I have it installed on my Android) - they posted a recent Cannes Festival barge show with it. However, I understood you had to buy licensing for the digital broadcasting.

Cobra brought their new Ignite system to the PGI convention last year, and they set up (I believe) 5 stations on the "C" line for people to use it. Most everyone that tried to use it had a problem because they couldn't figure out how to get their phone to connect to the Ignite unit via Bluetooth. Despite having detailed instructions at each station. So there might be a learning curve depending on your IT skill level.

Beyond that, it seemed to work well. For small shows it might be a nice alternative to the larger, more expensive options out there.

My only reservation about the system is, it's a Bluetooth connection. So you're going to be limited by the distance of a Bluetooth signal. 30' doesn't really work well when you're shooting most cakes, and certainly not for 1.75" mortars. So expect long runs of scab wire across your shoot site if you want to shoot safely and legally.

Disclaimer - My comments are based on the system I used a year ago. Many changes could have been made that I am unaware of. So take my comments with a grain of salt.

Just to comment on recent distance over Bluetooth, from my experience it could go over 300ft without any issue. I was testing it at my local store and we go to around 320ft before running out of space with no instability at all.

With that said, I still dislike Bluetooth. I am glad it loads the programming onto the modules so Bluetooth isn't constantly relied upon since it is inherently not the most reliable connection type.

When the Ignite system first came out I initially thought some of the same things about Bluetooth and distance, now I learned there are newer version of Bluetooth, with these newer version the working distance has increased. I can't speak for Cobra , however I believe the Ignite uses a Bluetooth Low Energy aka BLE. If someone is knowledgeable in this area , please free free to comment.

Just got this off the Ignite Website:

"For technology, IGNITE uses a long-range, power amplified BLE 5.0 transceiver with an external antenna. This is different from "classic Bluetooth" devices most people associate with wireless mice or headsets.

So there ya go. Learn something new every day!

Hi Rick! One of the challenges we had at PGI was people paired to the units and left the app open which prevented others from pairing. The units do have a security code on them when pairing. The PGI class C area was a bit unique for sure. Pairing, however, is super simple
