Someone I helped get ATF licensed years back sent me pictures today. He made a decision to build his own magazine. If he sends me more pictures I will try to post them. These pictures remind me when forums member Bazerk from Florida was building his and posting pictures along the way. For new members to pyrotalk forums, if you use the search feature on the forums you will find many ATF magazine related links.

My boy is working hard again today on the magazine. Any opinions on those locks and how they are placed?

Do you happen to know if the inside is finished or not? I noticed a few points of the screws sticking out - wouldn't they have to be covered?
Just curious - being that i haven't been in the 1.3 game since 2006 - didn't know if ATF changed some things or not.....That would not pass then.....

That is the same thing I told him in regard to the screws protruding inside. In the one picture I am trying to figure out why some of those external screws don't look flat so to speak. Next time he works on it I'll see if he can give some close up pictures on the screws.

The screws are a fairly easy fix and would fail the inspection. Using a hand grinder to remove the pointed tips below grade then push alittle liquid nail into the hole. Same with the screw heads, counter sink then fill the hole with liquid nails, scrape it flush with a putty knife. When the liquid nails dry, its hard to find the screw holes (Or, grind the pointed tips off flush and paint over with epoxy paint).
The same would have to be done to the protruding bolts/ nuts, doorknob and hinge on the inside of the door. They could just put a dab of epoxy paint over the spark producing items or buy a gallon at walmart and spray the entire interior.
Minus those few attention to detail items, the magazine turned out really well.

On some of the screws there are large nuts protruding inside the magazine, particularly on the internal door and puck locks. I can see grinding down whatever part of the screw is sticking out past the nut. Will the ATF accept the nut if it is covered with an epoxy type material? You can't grind the nuts down flush and still keep the strength on the locking mechanism. What do you or anyone recommend? Also if you have or can get any pictures of what is acceptable. please post the pictures.

I meant to grind the sharp tips off the wood / metal screws that are protruding from the outside into the interior. The bolts and nuts holding his locking devices cannot be ground off but can be covered. I personally covered mine with OSB as shown in the attachment. There is an "air gap" between the outter and inner layers of door that hide the nuts/bolts holding my hoods to the door. When my doors are closed, only OSB is visible.http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=5958&stc=1 http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=5959&stc=1
tmwjr talked about using epoxy paint in a metal shipping container here: http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/showthread.php?8768-Magazine-concerns-questions
He painted the entire interior with epoxy paint and it was approved so I'm assuming it would still be approved just painting the spark producing hardware Nuts/bolts. In one photo above, it shows the plywood cut out around the interior door knob and the dead bolt lock inside. If they are spark producing, they will probably have to be covered with something. Epoxy paint sprayed on it would probably suffice and still allow both to remain operational from the inside.

I used the same locks on my container. We did grind them flush and spray with epoxy. My epoxy was a little more expensive and from Sherwin Williams. I used flexseal to spray the bolts on the floor of the container. Picture attached and it passed.
Epoxy that I used: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/painting-contractors/products/pro-industrial-precatalyzed-water-based-epoxy

I would think you could use bedliner as well. When I redid those type 2 magazines, I countersunk all of the screws and wiped some wood filler putty over the tops and it passed just fine.
