I have done this before, purely for a project. It works. We have such easy access to HDPE and fiberglass mortars there’s no real need, but if you want to play around with it, here’s how: https://www.boomtownfireworks.com/service/mortars.aspx
Another method is to simply coat the mortars inside and out with Minwax Wood Hardener, or polyurethane.
