Is this acceptable for consumer grade canister shells?

1: The inner diameter is too large. I tested with 12? and 15? lengths. Both resulted in consistent low breaks (lit stars landing on ground).

2: I wasn?t happy with the ?safety check? (deliberately loaded upside down with a 1 min fuse). No confinement and I was unable to locate the tube.

I also did a comparison video with an Excalibur HDPE tube and the fiberglass tube packaged with the Bazooka canister shells for comparison.

- Fiberglass came out as the clear winner.
- The Excalibur tube (HDPE) was almost in two pieces.
- As mentioned above, I could not find the PE4710 pipe.

Always fun to look at pictures and videos added to a post. Some enthusiast really have a desire to make their own mortars. I never see someone wanting to make their own end plugs. To me that seems like the hardest part of the project without having special tooling. The people in the business like pyroboom sell these mortars at reasonable prices. If you have desire to make something, make the framing the mortars go in. You really need to know the inner size of these. People in the business will sometimes say 2 inch but its really not 2 inch and then other times it really is 2 inch.
On a side note with the fiberglass mortars supplied in the kits. There is standard they are built to. I believe it is made to fire everything in the kit twice. Past that point who knows how much longer it will go. A good HDPE rack from someone like pyroboom will last along time. A good investment if you stay in pyrotechnics.

Without actually examining the Excal tube in person I would almost say that that is not a TRUE HDPE tube. We sell racks with HDPE tubes and from time to time a shell does get loaded wrong or actually fails. I have NEVER seen a HDPE tube blow apart like that. That looks awfully fishy to me. But that is just my opinion. Not trying to cause a stir or call anyone out. I am just saying......

I've wondered why nobody brings this up - that those Excal tubes are not HDPE. I've never bought a case of them, just because everyone else does, and I'm like that - but it doesn't say it on the tube or the box anywhere - at least in videos I've seen on them. I do currently have a case of Demon Shells by Pyro Demon, and it appears to me to be the exact same tube - and it does not say HDPE anywhere on the tube or on the box. And I've wondered why the tubes have the extra sleeve on them around where the shell sits - when normal HDPE racks do not. I'm kinda new to the whole shell game, so I maybe shouldn't speak on it, but I did come across a video where a fella brings this up and suggests that maybe they aren't what we think they are. Just curious.

Anyone with a drill press and the correct sized hole saws can make plugs for both HDPE and fiberglass mortars. A 2-1/8" hole saw is almost perfect for regular DR11 mortars. Fiberglass mortars are bit more tricky. They come in various sizes and they're harder and less forgiving than HDPE, but I imagine they'll last quite a long time.

Just curious.Jake's says on their website they are HDPE. Your guess is as good as mine with the sleeve. Regular HDPE mortars don't have them because they're just cut sections of extruded pipe. The sleeve is something Jake's is doing alone. I can only guess they think it will help.

I never see pictures of homemade mortar plugs. I would like to see some and how they fit when homemade. Anyone out there making some please post pictures and include the fit both.

I have been making them for DR11 tubes. Like jamisonlm3 said all you need is a 2-1/8 hole saw and drill press.

technically its need to be high density piping hence HDPE. THE HIGH PART IS WHAT TAKE THE HEAT OF THE COMBUST OF LIFTING THE SHELL. IF NOT AFTER 1 OR 2 SHELLS EVEN EXCAL, THE PIPE WILL MELT IT AND FRAGMENT LIKE PVC. SO YOU NEED HIGH DENSITY POLY EATH. PIPE.

Could just be an optical illusion, but the wall thickness on the tubes in the pictures seem thinner than a standard DR-11 tube. Maybe that's why the tube shattered??
As for them being HDPE.... The shattered tube does look like what a HDPE tube would look like after it shatters. It didn't blow apart in shards, it fractured all over the place. So I'll buy the HDPE part. They just look very thin to be standard DR-11 tubes.

Few years back I started making some plugs to make my own tubes... after about 10 I said screw this.. and ordered them from pyroboom... plus they put a nice bevel on one end so they go in a little easier.. we’ll worth it... and when I needed more.. i then just ordered the whole tubes from them ... even more worth it!!!

How does 2 1/8 equal 1.91 and it fits?The hole saw makes a hole that's roughly 2-1/8". The plug that the hole saw creates as a byproduct of the way it works is very, very close to the 1.91" ID. It's actually slightly oversized, but the plug can still be easily tapped in with a hammer.

The hole saw cuts outside diameter and you are using inside diameter.

When I get some time i'll make a video to show how it fits. Again just like jamisonlm3 said it's a tad large than 1.91. But when you hammer it in with 1 quick hit it will fit tightly in place. I use a rubber mallet, place the plug on a hard surface put the tube on top of the plug a with one straight down blow the tube will slide over the plug. I can make 30 plugs for around $2.50 and some time.

Yeah I've seen a lot of catos over the years. HPDE always just swells or splits open at worst. Sometimes with enough force to break the rack. Never seen a compliant shell do that kind of damage to one though. I've seen plenty of 3-6" guns look just like that after a cato but that's a different animal entirely.

They didn't start putting that sleeve on them until a few years ago. They do it because people get drunk, load one upside down, and insist on holding the gun. The sleeve saves fingers and reduces the number of law suits they have to deal with.
