I have just learned that HB 4293 a bill I have taken a great interest in over the past several years has been signed and sent for publishing into law. Fireworks are to be legal in Michigan for the first time since 1931 :) Hooray!!

The bill will now be published by the Secretary of State and be assigned a public act number to take effect January 1, 2012 :)

Here is the link to the bill. There was some concern in the fireworks community about the bill limiting who could sell fireworks. The bill may have stated you needed 10 million in insurance to sell fireworks, this requirement would have given protection to the big companies that sell fireworks and eliminated the smaller tent fireworks seller. For any real consumer fireworks legislation to really be effective it has to allow everyone to sell fireworks even Walmart. If someone has time to read it here is the link

Yes, This is a concern of ours the insurance requirement is too large, however a mandatory review is going to take place in two years and it was decided not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. This bill languished for six years and there was consensus from my perspective that we needed to get something through and then we could change it. Also, this text will likely be changed when session two of the legislative starts in January. The governor wants more to prevent "fly by night" actors from selling and he made that a condition of his signature on this bill. But I agree its not fair that most will be prevented from selling because of this insurance requirement and I am continuing to lobby for its being changed.

It would be nice for Ohio. I will tell you though contact your legislatures that is what happened in Michigan six years ago a group of us contacted our legislatures at memorial day parades and in writing later and we convinced them that changes were needed. Also, don't be afraid to tell them about your own expertise as they will find it valuable to know they are speaking to someone who is an expert in the field.
