Just an update. My man here is still selling these emergency rocket flares. I have the details in the description of this YouTube video from 2016. If you are not familiar with these , these rockets are past a set expiration date and then make their way into the secondary pyro market. The legal way of disposing of them is to call the local authorities and let them know you are "Disposing" of emergency rocket flares. You for sure want to call the authorities if you are shooting neat a body of water.

Looking over some of these emergency rocket flares, I have a partially disassembled one. Before soaking it in water to destroy it I took a few photos. I am actually unsure if water will render it not explosive. That is why I poked a hole in the side of it. I am also curious what material the parachute is made out of. These are actually very well made and when they make their way into the secondary pyro market they are a fraction of their original cost.

I bought a 3 pack of them that came in a bright yellow plastic waterproof storage container at PGI 2016. Still have them--haven't had a place to pop them off at---might just go out my back field some day and shoot one---but we have BlackHawks flying around here on training maneuvers all the time....so I guess that wouldn't be such a good idea!

These are excellent, and I agree that the build quality is far better than anything you would normally see sold as fireworks. They are meant to be waterproof and function after years of rough storage. There is also a Coast Guard and a spec called "SOLAS" or "safety of life at sea" that they have to meet.
I highly recommend checking out the 60 second distress flares if you have someone in the advertiser pool or group who can get these. They are a super-intense Magnesium flare that you hold in your hand. We lit a few expired ones off last 4th of July, and they were impressive.
For the hand-held flares, try to avoid the ones you bang against the ground to initiate. We had maybe a 1-in-3 dud rate, although they could be lit using an already-burning flare. The pull-wire type were 100% reliable, even some that were 15+ years old.

Have any videos of the 3-minute smoke grenades? 70,000 cubic feet is a lot of smoke!

Am I the only one that thinks buying and/or using these emergency flares is a really really REALLY bad idea??
