I'm decided to start talking about the festival of Recco, because of I live here e I participate since years thanks to my father who is an organizer!
"Recco è...8 settembre!" is the slogan that until a few years ago appeared on the poster of the festivity of Recco!
On the 7th and 8th september there is the traditional "Sagra del fuoco" ("Festival of fire"), that coincides with the festivity of the patron of the town N. S. of Suffragio! Every year the seven Districts of Recco (Bastia, Collodari, Liceto, Ponte, San Martino, Spiaggia and Verzemma) set seven fireworks displays on the promenade (three "at night" on the 7th - three "at night" and one "at day" on the 8th).
Here is the location and the pyrotechnics:
- Bastia District (east pier): Bartolomeo Bruscella's Pyrotechnic from Modugno (Bari)
- Collodari District (west pier): Amodio Di Matteo's Pyrotechnic from Sant'Antimo (Napoli)
- Liceto District (east pier): Ugo Lieto's Pyrotechnic from Visciano (Napoli)
- Ponte District (west pier): Lorenzo La Rosa's Pyrotechnic from Bagheria (Palermo)
- San Martino District (west pier): Gerardo Scudo's Pyrotechnic from Ercolano (Napoli)
- Spiaggia District (west pier): Scudo Brother's Pyrotechnic from Roccarainola (Napoli)
- Verzemma District (west pier): Carlo Ferreccio's Pyrotechnic from Avegno (Genova)
Recco is always happy to honor the Virgin of Suffragio, now known in Liguria as "Madonna dell'8!" ("Virgin of the 8th!").
I suggest you the video of the edition of this year, just passed, in order of firing! First three...

Welcome to the forum Quartiere and thank you for posting the excellent videos. I found it interesting that each display started with several salutes. Is there a special reason for this? However the festival of Recco is above all known for the "mascoli", a very ancient local tradition! During the procession the seven Districts set a "sparata" that they set fire when passes the ark of the Virgin!
Among the most important "sparate":
1) the flag-raising of all Districts at 9:30 a.m. on the 7th september, that represents the beginning of the festivity
2) the traditional "saluto dell'alba" of all Districts ("Greeting of dawn") at 3:30 a.m. on the 8th september (according to legend, the hour of the birth of the Virgin of Suffragio)
3) the furls flag of all Districts at 6:30 p.m. on the 9th september, that represents the end of the festivity

1) the "sparata" of Verzemma District at midday on the 8th september
2) the "sparate" of Collodari, Liceto, Bastia, Spiaggia and Ponte Districts during the procession of the 8th september
3) the "sparata" of San Martino District at midnight on the 8th september

Emanuele

We are very fortunate to have you become part of this website. You describe in great detail the fireworks traditions of Italy. Many of the larger fireworks companies in United States trace their roots back to Italy when their ancestors immigrated to United States. Today some of these Italian families continue to operate these fireworks display companies. I only wish some of the daytime fireworks with the long chain of salutes would make its way into some of the celebrations in United States. Unfortunately many of the traditional Italian pyrotechnic art is lost in United States.
I have a question and will include two videos from Italy. In these videos we see the long chain of salutes with a man following in front of it as it fires. It does not appear as if he is lighting it. What is the purpose of him moving in front of it because it appears to be burning well. Is he there to reignite it in the event it goes out? Does anyone know what those devices are made of? How is that effect done? It reminds me of the “Canon Simulators” I used in my prior video. The salute effect is upward.
I also want to commend you for your descriptive writing skills and use of the English language. I will also translate my post in Italian for the benefit of someone from Italy viewing the forum that may not understand English.

My favorite part in this first video is starting at the 1:32 mark. He had a very close call.

Infact, when the "sparata" turn off, the man can turn on it with the "bettone" (a stick with a ball of hot steel)!

The effect that it produces is a big bang (with flame) and a lot of smoke!

I located another video that shows some of the preparation for this event. In the beginning you can see the men tamping a charge into the "cannons". When I saw the first videos I thought they looked like crockery tubes, but in the close up they do look like little cannons..maybe made from iron? You can see a fuse hole at the base of several of them. It seems like a line of powder is laid out on the ground that they are placed on & that is how they are ignited. Some of the larger units look like there is a piece of fuse or black match going to the line of powder. This is a very unique event. Thank you for making us aware of it.

That last video was great. If I were there I would have got some great ground zero camera footage. It looks those devices are made of metal and a composition is added to make the explosion. I have used a similar device on a professional fireworks display. A two mixture composition came in two bottles A and B it was referred to. It most likely was just a simply well calculated flash mixture. An electric match was inserted into the hole at the bottom and it was ready to use. It was used on a building top around 60 feet above the ground. Many people do not know you can use flash powder this way. You really do not need to contain it on top of these containers. Perhaps a paper towel inserted in the hole top would be advisable. The set up time of these celebrations you are sending us has to be very labor intensive. The man that is following along with the hot metal ball on the stick may or may not be necessary but it appears to be more of a tradition. I think what people watching this need to know is a very thick type of metal has to be used and not just any pipe will properly work. A standard pipe will blow apart and cause injuries. I would like to know what the mixture is they are using. It looks like a version of flash mixed with something else.
These celebrations are beautiful and I really like the fact they are done in the daytime. If I ever run across someone that has this type of equipment I will have to try this

I propose you a detailed description, divided in six points
1) The "mascolo" (also known as "mortaletto" or "mortaretto") is an object made of cast iron that is loaded with a small amount of black powder with sawdust pressed: it weighs about 2 kg, is high 12-15 cm and it has got a wider base that has got a small hole (the "abboggino") Today the "mascolo" is produced in steel because the current legislation prohibits the use of cast iron
2) The biggest "mascolo" is called "cannone"
3) The black powder used for the "sparate" is of two types: glossy and dark. The glossy powder is sold to the state granular and it needs sieving to be used. The coarse side is used for loading the "mascoli", the fine part for the realization of the "riga". The dark powder is sold in powder form and is used as a "reffino" as powder for priming (is pressed in the "abboggino")
4) The "sparate" of "mascoli" can be divided into two parts: the "riga" and "riondino". The "riga" is a succession of "mascoli", tied together with black powder, which, with its burning fire leads to "mascoli" creating a rhythmic cadence.
5) The "riondino" (called "ramadan" in Rapallo and the Gulf of Tigullio and "branda" in Sori) is the end of the "sparata". In its classic form is a provision of "mascoli" designed to elongated triangle. Traditionally three "cannoni" close the "sparata"
6) The "sparata" is followed by the "fuochino" that carries the "bettone"

This tradition is still alive in the province of Genoa in the festivities of Rapallo (in july), Santa Margherita Ligure (in august) and many others. However, with Recco, they are places where the "sparate" have got a special meaning:
- in Rapallo, the most important "sparata" is called "Panegirico" and every year it is made at midday on 2nd july by a different District (according to legend, the hour of the appearance of the Virgin of Montallegro)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBNqGiQZ44k
- always in Rapallo, during the evenings of 1st, 2nd and 3th july the six Districts make short "sparate" before the fireworks displays!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_X-pAykgVM

- in Santa Margherita Ligure, in honor of San Lorenzo, is made a "sparata" when the procession finishes and enters in the church

However, the life of the festivity of Recco are the patron of the town, the Virgin of Suffragio, and the sanctuary where She is venerated, that represent the symbol of an entire community!

- The ark of Virgin is accepted in the sanctuary

The festivity of Recco, just passed, coinciding this year with the weekend, was unfortunately ruined by bad weather on 8th september!
The fireworks displays were routinely made, but the "sparate of mascoli" were made early in the morning of 8th september because of the rain (only Spiaggia and Bastia Districts have stood until the evening, when the Procession left from the church).

This year many people of Germany, Poland, France, North and South-Italy came to Recco to take part to the festivity on 7th and 8th september!

Thanks for posting these videos. We just do not do these types of fireworks in United States. We actually do very little daytime fireworks. It would be great if have this in United States. I can never figure out what the man is holding that stick with the glowing ball attached or whatever it is. I have never seen them need to use it one time. Although I have to admit it looks fun to be so close to the explosions.

The man with that stick with the glowing ball serves to kindle the gunpowder if the sparata (the shots) is stopped
