I remember once, when I was part of a Civil War Confederate reenactment group, here in Michigan. We used either a reloadable mortar or single shot, to portray an artillery shell burst in the air.

I guess these are somewhat "Pyro" related. As they contain black powder in a paper tube These are Civil War era artillery shell paper fuzes. From a package dated 1864. These 5 & 8 second paper time fuzes we're inserted in the top of the shell. Just thought I would share. Maybe I should light one, to see it burn.. They're 150+ years old and are rolled so tightly, they might explode if ignited; like a firecracker.

Are you sure those are from 1864? Would be great to hear some opinions on these spoolettes . What else is interesting is the 5 second and the 8 second look to be the same physical size.

I've got one pack still sealed from "Frankford Arsenal" "1864". Large quantities of these fuzes we're bought by an early military surplus store ( in business 1880's-1940's)
The Frankford Arsenal is a former United States Army ammunition plant located adjacent to the Bridesburg neighborhood of Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I think Bannerman's Surplus used to sell a lot of that stuff. Here's a link to their 1913 catalog:
