In general, I firmly believe there is no difference in safety between hand-firing and electrical firing. I myself prefer shooting by hand.

Lets hope for a speedy recovery none-the-less.

Shells with igniters installed have been known to fire when dropped. The fatal accident a few years ago in Orange Co. NY was caused by a worker pulling the igniter from the lift charge (friction). E-matches are radio-frequency sensitive. Approaching lightening storms presents a different set of safety concerns (a lightning strike could produce a million volt potential with 100,000 amp discharge current thereby firing part or all of the electric matches in its vicinity whether they are shunted or not), as does poorly grounded electrical devices and power lines. At my age, I'm not about to ditch my case of railroad fusees for a firing system.

When there is an accident well ahead of show time it appears to be electric match related. That comes from just looking back over the recent years. They all seem to be in the professional setting. Wish we could get more details on this , there will be police/fire report somewhere. Do we know what fireworks company?
