One of my latest builds... Was supposed to go up on labor day, got rained out. So it sits in the magazine waiting.

Nice. I'm on "inside--non chem" projects for the winter months. Rolling tubes, cases for salamis, etc.

I do that most nights after work, cut chip board discs. Cut strips of Kraft paper for pasting. I bought some aluminum cylinder stock, want to try machining a star gun to test fire different sizes stars.

Looking good , keep the pictures coming. Hopefully it will stimulate more interest in the hobby.
.
At pyrosamm, on that last picture with the green box of Nitrile gloves in it. What is the fuse you have in the paper tubing leader?

That is the "quick fuse" its usually a grey paper wound fuse that burns at a rate of .02-.04 seconds per foot. You can buy rolls of this fuse and leader pipe, you run a single strand of this fuse through the pipe and you now have a leader that burns hundreds of feet per second!! So for any of you who dont have the patience to wait for the atf license you can make up your own quickmatch in a heart beat I will post some up close photos for you

here is a photo showing the various faster fuses. Note the description where it details the burn rate of each fuse

How did you source your material for the 16 shot cake? Did you make the tubes and base yourself? I have always wanted to try and make cakes like that.

3" salamis? What is the most breaks you've made? The old masters had competitions (wagers is more like it) as to who could build the most breaks. One story had the winner one year with 12 breaks (11 color, bottom salute). It was shot out of a 4' mortar, sunk in a 30 gallon barrel filled with sand and hoisted up to the roof of the porch on the plant's owner's house. The salute detonated a mere 20' off the ground, but he won nonetheless.

Reload a spent cake maybe?

I have done that a few years ago actually. Took a spent 49 shot 2" cake and loaded it up with 1.75" color canisters though, fused them up with different speeds, slowest to fastest with the last 14 being salutes all going at relatively the same time. It performed well.

I'm guessing you're right though, he just made actual inserts.

Hey! Is that horsehide glue?

Gorilla non foaming wood glue, not sure what it's made of but it doesn't burn very well and sticks very well.

Sorta what I use all my cardboard and some of my fiberglass kit tubes for.... No shells in it yet, just figuring out spacing for a show in a box....http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=3663&stc=1

All you need is the following to make a cake board....

1 - Piece of 1 inch thick particle board or plywood in the dimensions you want your cake.
16 - equal length guns length varies depending on type of inserts you will use.
1 - hole saw that matches the diameter of your guns as closely as possible
1 - half pound of bentonite clay to ramm in bottom of guns
1 - tube of construction adhesive
1 - roll of fuse or rolls if you intend on changing up the firing speed
1 - cup of BP roughly
16 - or however many shots your cake is inserts, could be shells, salutes, even comets

Done!

2 color and a bottom shot is all I do anymore. I have problems with arthritis in my hands and fingers--I don't have the strength to properly spike anything larger than that--even with a tension jig. I find it easier to make the Mexican style "peanut" shells since they don't require the spiking...and they can be done with different sizes totem pole--eg: 4" color on the bottom, 3" color next, and a 2 1/2" salute on top.
