Greetings folks (and Dave),

I'm an experienced laser and intelligent lighting hobbyist who hosts a few private parties at my residence throughout the year. Specifically, I'm known for my annual, invite-only Halloween bash which features a very large sound system, highly-programmed light shows, 5-6 regional DJs, loads of food and booze, etc. Each year, I've attempted to go above and beyond to wow my guests with something new.

Here's the teaser I sent to early guests for the 2014 Hauntfest (I never got around to uploading the videos for the 2015 Bash):

And here's a video of some programming tests of a couple of my lighting fixtures that year:

So I like to tinker with "shows," and I'm considering expanding my party repertoire to the July 4th holiday. Of course, one can't host a proper 4th of July Bash without fireworks, so I've been following Dave's channel for a while. Today, on a whim, I started investigating what it might take to be legal here in Ohio. Holy cow. The ATF license seems like the least of my worries. There's all this jargon like Authority Having Jurisdiction (is that a Sheriff, Fire Marshall?), letter of proficiency, training courses, all kinds of hoops to jump through.

I'm specifically interested in coordinated, electronically-triggered shows, but I'm perfectly happy using 1.4G consumer fireworks. I suppose my question is; a once-a-year, legal display at my private residence, is this something that's feasible? Where might I find assistance in navigating the bureaucracy?

Thanks in advance,
SG

Yeah, what Westpapyro said. That would be a good start.

Unfortunately you are living in a very strict state when it comes to fireworks so it will definitely be a challenge for you to do what you are wanting at a venue of your choosing.

Definitely check into joining the neopg club.

Don't you hate when that happens! I did come across neopg, are there any such clubs closer to the Cincinnati or Dayton area? I came across a company called Rozzi Fireworks that appears to offer reasonably priced training in the Cincy area. Is anyone familiar with them?

Just my luck!

If that bash you are having is a paid event it going to change the rules on the fireworks display. If you interested in training in Ohio, consider one of my advertisers Lynch Imports just outside of Cincinnati. Not only will they train you but they can help you get an ATF license to purchase 1.3 fireworks. They have a fireworks demo and official training listed on their website.By the way I like that username SilentGloves.

Hey, Thanks Dave. I wouldn't think of charging for a party, although they are usually BYOB. I'll shoot out an email to Lynch. Thanks!

SilentGloves,

There is a more local guild in the regional tri-state area. Bluegrass Pyrotechnics Guild.

Oh, try the neopg sister club, OPAG.
OPAG.us
They have shoots a little closer to you. I believe Dave shot a show from a winery with them once.

Hey Everyone! If you are in Southern Ohio, definitely check out OPAG. They are a great bunch of people to learn and shoot with! If you reach out to them, tell them that NEOPG sent you! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!
