It is all very unfortunate, I am trying to figure out exactly how it happened. It appear something was already burning and he reached down to pick it up. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

My guess is wrecklessness and stupidity. The cracker looks like it had a preburner like many euro-market ground salutes do. They flare for a few seconds before the report. They are essentially inserts for report cakes that are fused to be used as firecrackers. I'm sure it wasn't the first one he had seen go off that night. He picked it up and it exploded. That is not an accident or a malfunction.

Great pickup, that is the same thing I suspect. For those not familiar with what he means when he says "Preburner" watch this video starting at 38 seconds. If you did not know how this type of firecracker performed you may think it was a fountain and pick it up. That is how I suspect the accident occurred. These types of firecrackers are common on the European black market. Many orginate out of Italy I suspect.

The high quality ones are from Italy and Poland. There are many that are Chinese made. There are several with heavy clay plugs that I feel makes the dangerous.
