What comes first the magazine or the ATF license/permit? It may be the opposite of the way you think.

Great video Dave. Can't wait to see how this turns out, please keep us informed.
Hey Dave
I wish I had gotten more time to talk to you at pyrofest. I was able to get my license and my magazine at the same time. They inspected and approved everything on the interview. I wish I could figure out how to post pictures I would post them for people to see. The ATF really like my reasons for the magazine and if anyone is having trouble getting contingency storage it is a great way to go. I have a total of 300.00 into my magazine. I have a toolbox magazine and can only have 50 lbs in it at a time and no bulk salutes. Maybe next year me and the wife will see you at pyrofest.

I would be really interested in seeing how you did your magazine also. I look at different ones around the Internet as it is a future plan for me also.
I sent the pictures to dave. Some people line the box with wood but the paint is a non sparking surface so the atf was good with it as it is. Notice the locks are in pockets so that they can't be sawed off. I had the cylinders changed to a six pin tumbler.
When they called to schedule my interview I told them that I had a job box magazine that I needed to have approved, They google earth my property to see that I had a separated building that i was putting it in. She asked me why I wanted the magazine and I told her that I didn't want to drive 100 miles to return any product that didn't go off. Having a small magazine helps out on this and I believe helped me get my license.

I did not know they painted these with that non-sparking paint. I am curious did you find some documentation with the box that stated that? Also for new people please note he has the magazine in a separate non-inhabited building. Did you bolt that box to the floor?
I remember an ATF Inspector telling me once, one of their inspection, a man built what looked like a outhouse and had a magazine inside. It meet the requirement. The problem was he had 51 pounds of dynamite when they counted. The limit was 50. He received a warning letter.

That's awesome. I'll post some pictures for future ideas I had for a magazine later on down the road. I have a few shipping containers we use for storage. Later on down the road I might try and get one approved after making the necessarily updates to it. If your ever in the area I have two by fort cherry ambulance in mcdonald in pyramid supply parking lot. later on down the road I'll probably try and get some advice off you on what to do best place and so on making them legal for use as a magazine. But that's anothed adventure I'll get the 54 done first.
Right now we use then to store tools on job sites if we are gonna be on then for months I believe I paid around 1,000 to 1500 for them delivered. If someone in the area is looking for them I wouldn't mind getting rid of at least one of them and can haul it. I'll get some pictures up when I go into work tomorrow.
Thanks Dave for posting the pictures for me. When I told the person that was coming out to do the interview with me, she did a lot of the research to make sure I did everything according to the orange book. I did have to show her that the locks were changed to 6 pin tumbler. I think the orange book calls for 5 pin tumblers. Ive been told if you bought a case of salutes and mixed them with color they would not be considered bulk salutes.
I did not anchor it to the floor as my shop had deadbolts and locks on all of the doors. I think if you had it in a building that did not lock you would have to secure it to the floor

That right, we get the license first and then the magazine. That is the new way to do it. LOL

That's great melp, I've been looking into those as well. Now one question is how big of a job box does the atf allow as a storage magazine? Some I've seen are pretty good size.

Made this job box from lowes into a magazine in 2009. It has all plastic bolts and nuts in side. http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=769&stc=1http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=770&stc=1http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=771&stc=1http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=772&stc=1http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=773&stc=1http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=774&stc=1
I think most people that are getting a class 4 Magazine are using the 4'long boxes, you could get the six or even the 8' boxes but you still can only have 50 lbs in it. The first professional shoot that I did we added up the weight and it was only 47 lbs and would have easily fit in my 4'long box.

The box in the picture is a 4ft by 25ft. If you only put shell in it you can reach the 50 lbs of explosives. but if you put thunder king 25 shot or other cakes. you can fill a magazine with over 50 lbs and not have 50 lbs of explosives. examples would be 50 25 shot thunder kings. Total Net weight 60.96 lbs, total explosives
weight is only 15.25 lbs

These are great pictures and information you guys are sharing, thanks for posting. I just heard from my shipping container guy mentioned at the start of this post. the Department of Environmental Protection here in Pennsylvania was on site and verbally said they are OK with the storage. They gave him a list of things he has to do to make the container in compliance. The DEP guy said 75% of the time the ATF goes along with their approval. If all goes well I plan to visit the magazine site Thursday and make a video of the start of the process. The DEP process is $100.00 the first year and $50.00 every year after. I saw one these approved containers at XFX Pyrotechnics, they give you some certificate to post on the wall of the magazine to show it was approved.
On the small job boxes I heard you had to line them with plywood. That is why I was surprised on the orange you did not need to do that. Not sure if it was mentioned or not but do you have to bolt the job box magazine to the floor? I think once these are approved you have to then tell the local authority. I would not tell the local authority until the magazine is approved.
This may be the link here in Pennsylvania

Im pretty sure the orange book says it has to have a non sparking interior and a heavy coating of paint I am told covers that. On my interview I asked if I had to bolt it down and was told no because of the building I had it in, were the doors had locks and dead bolts. From what I was told there are guys that build a shed roof to weatherproof their job box and at that point is were the box would have to be bolted to the floor. At one point I was going to stand the box up on end so it would be more like a refrigerator style. I thought it might save a little space in my shop, I still might do this.
As for the locks they are a master lock with a 3/8 shackle I went to the locksmith and had them change the tumblers into a six pin tumbler. I have a total of 46.00 in the locks and having the the tumblers changed. The orange book tells you exactly what locks you need and how they have to be cut proof as you see in my box and pyromustangs. I didn't have to weld on the hoods over the locks as mine are built into the box. The hinge on my box is internal meaning the only way you can get to the hinge is from the inside of the box which you would have to unlock it to get to it. I did most of my research right here on pyrotalk I believe Mguerra has a thread on it with a lot of the same information that I am trying to explain.

Ya this thread has been very helpful as a magazine is deffinely something I'm going to try and pursue in the future. In no hurry but I have the containers and earth moving equipment, so it will give me a project. I wanna try and get some larger racks built still looking for a place in driving distance where I can pick up some HDPE

That's a question I was going to ask next. Just to get a clarification it's 50 lbs of explosives weight that's allowed not overall weight of the shells or cakes?

Thanks they actually have some great prices on pipe. Did you make your own plugs or get them online?
Picture of storage container when I get a decent spot ready for it I'll move it out when work slows down. needs a little love.

Someone here will give you a link to Midwest wood supply or whatever it is called. I am not handy with wood but I am surprised some of you wood guys are not able to cut your own. At Matt, your funny you making the mortars even before you have your license and buy the shells. What size do plan on making? Nice shipping container you have there. I can see another local fireworks magazine is in the making. You are going to move along in this 1.3 fireworks pretty quick I think.

I'm trying to figure out who the closest distributor to me, in Northern Ca., that carries 1.3g. I think its way up in Oregon.

I figured if something happened someone would get a good deal on some mortars lol. But I'm not to worried I've never been arrested or had a bad speeding ticket. I've done some filing through the atf before registering class 3 gun items like a suppressors and it worked out so I should be ok. A local gun dealer here I'm sure you know became a class 3 dealer and I had to give it a try. Bruce at federal firearms.

I also hate to keep building mortar racks out of dr11 for 1.75 inch shells because if everything goes good I don't think they will be seeing as much use.
I want to make many many more so next year I don't have so many cakes in my show even the 3 and 4 inch shells have such nice breaks for the price. When I called I think the 3 inch pipe was around 1.50 a ft and 1.80 for 4 inch.
Was gonna try and get 100ft of each 3 and 4 inch get those built on the weekends.

I cut all of my own wood plugs with a hole saw up to 3" on my drill press. 4" and 5" plugs I bought from here. http://www.midwestwoodspecialties.com/fireworks_plugs.html
I suggest you buy enough pipe to make enough mortars for a whole case of shells that way you won't have to reload during a show.

We found a local company right here where I am in N.Y. that sells hdpe pipe. For 1.75 it was $55 for a 40ft length. I haven't stopped in and checked them out yet but I think they go bigger too. Nice mag mattfr12.

Does the storage facility containing the magazine have to be a certain distance from inhabited dwellings or whatever?
