WESTLAKE, Ohio — A "catastrophic failure" in a fireworks display at one of Northeast Ohio's most popular shopping centers left nine people with minor injuries Sunday evening, police said.
A display box on the roof of one of the buildings failed and caused fireworks to bounce along the roof, Westlake Assistant Fire Chief Mike Freeman said.
Organizers shut down the display immediately, according to a news release from the Westlake police department.
None of the nine people injured were hospitalized, police said.
Few additional details were available Monday morning. The Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office investigates accidents involving fireworks, Freeman said, and Westlake firefighters are waiting to hear from their investigators.
A fire marshal's office representative did not immediately return a message seeking comment Monday morning.
The Hudson-based American Fireworks was responsible for the show, firefighters said.
A woman who answered the phone at their Hudson office said the company was working with investigators, but didn't have any comment beyond that.
A Crocker Park representative declined to comment, but said they will provide more information after they receive further details from the fire marshal's office.
In an amateur video of the incident posted on Facebook, spectators can be heard screaming after a loud bang. A woman is heard saying "Let's get out of here."
