HDPE or fiberglass

Pretty straight forward question. What would yinz recommend or what would the majority buy if you had the choice of HDPE or fiberglass mortars? Gettin some 4 inch fancy shells and 6 inch ghosts from Kellners to add to my order. Gonna need some guns. Just seeing what is recommended and why

I personally would go with HDPE.

Up to 6" I'd go with Hdpe, after that I'd go with fiberglass for weight! I have a bad back.
But even consumer I own fiberglass for 1.75"

matter of personal preference. I have had both - but fiberglass is lighter to haul around.

what ever you decide I have both really no advantages in shooting ability in either one just fiberglass is lots lighter. everyone knows how heavy racks get when is 100 outside

Like Joyce says it is a matter of personal preference. I would just throw out there that some of the fiberglass mortars out there are very inconsistent in how the are made. Bottoms can be extremely bulbous which makes it difficult to fit properly in racks. NOT OURS of course LOL. A little QA goes a long way.

Fiberglass is lighter but you need to wear gloves and long sleeves when handling it. It WILL shed fibers in to your skin. The yellow fiberglass has an advantage. After a shoot, the next day in daylight, clear your mortars of lift cups. You can see down in to the tubes without a headlamp, the yellow fiberglass is translucent. When you clear out your black HDPE you need a headlamp to see down in there. It's a small detail, but I noticed it and liked it.

It may also be a factor of where they are purchased and shipped. Chech with your local suppliers. Kellner and FireArt both sell mortars local to you.

Of course fiberglass is more expensive than your standard HDPE mortar tube, depending on where you're located. HDPE tends to expands once an explosion occurs inside the tube. Fiberglass shatters. So, most people choose HDPE mortar tubes in order to shoot a more safer display. You can use fiberglass, but remember, the explosion will cause shrapnel to fan out. Your choice. Oh yes, as a side note, I don't use fiberglass mortar tubes due to the fact that they could easily melt, depending on how thick the tube was manufactured or how powerful the lift of a shell was.

Fiberglass does not shatter. It shreds. This is why it has wide use in consumer and professional applications, it does not shatter. PVC shatters. Fiberglass is completely acceptable and lighter to lug around. I load and unload ALL my mortars from the trailer by myself and I far prefer to haul the fiberglass.

Sorry, I meant to say shreds. I sometimes get fiberglass mortar tubes mixed up with pvc pipe mortar tubes. My bad.:p

I have racks 2-1/2 thru 5" in fiberglass and have not had any issues with them.
