Is it just me but the BPA seem to miss the point with some of their training material? E.g. Video 2 above should be relabelled an accident video possibly due to inexperience or negligence! Ok so maybe it's taken out of context here but that's the problem. It has no place along side "training videos" with that caption when it is not qualified as a way NOT to do things! It could easily be taken the wrong way by a student or trainee.. Are the BPA keen to accidentally "train" people to miss load shells? I remember being shocked to see course content on reloading of mortars for their BPA level 1 certificate some years back. For a course aimed at people with possibly little experience at all why not just advise to avoid reloading completely if you have to show reloading shells at all at that level of training. Or at least be very clear of the risks involved with reloading.

I wouldn't mind so much but they appear self appointed experts too. The true irony is that In many circles in the UK a BPA qualification is not necessarily viewed as deeming the holder a good technician but it may make the difference with insurance or client requirements.

They had a video DVD when I did my course. Quite interesting too. Some good high speed film footage and some great exploding iso shipping containers. Still got a copy here somewhere..

I am a Senior Firer for 1st Galaxy Fireworks. The video showing the Mortars blowing up were based on the types of Shell malfunction and also what can go wrong if a shell is placed upside down. It is important to understand and recognise the dangers of flying Mortar debris and the distance required to prevent serious injury. First Galaxy Fireworks are official BPA trainers and having the BPA qualification fills the requirement under UK law as being a person with specialist knowledge in order to legally be allowed to handle CAT4 fireworks. Being in possession of them while being able to prove the 'Person of specialist knowledge' is important unless you want to spend time in prison.

Understanding the nature and importance of having training videos like this in regard to Health and Safety is vital. If any Senior firer allowed any of their crew to load mortars in a dangerous way, the Senior Firer would be wholly responsible for the consequences to crew members, spectators and is liable to a massive fine and up to 10 years imprisonment.

There are alot more safety related videos done by First Galaxy fireworks and they certainly do make you stop to think.
They go through every aspect of safety and the avoidance of serious injury or even death to crew and spectators.

First video shows to fuse into pyro clock or pyro timer.

Second video shows what can go wrong with faulty shells and incorrectly loaded mortars and also shows the projectile of dangerous flying debris.

Third video is about why the shroud is important. Ever try sliding a shroudless igniter into QM which is tightly made?. The shell could go off within a few inches of you. Igniter powder is very sensitive to friction.

Fourth video goes through slowing down the rate of speed at which QM burns. It is more a matter of timing the shell burst to avoid skypuke.

Fifth video shows the different burn rates of different types of fuse.

All part of the 'firers' course. Senior Firers is far more advanced.
