Hello everyone I was wondering why is the ideal size HDPE tune size for excals. I was told 1.91 but I want to see what others think. Also for ball shells and technically there are different sized ball shells also, would you go with 1.75 or 1.81? What it really comes down to is would 1.91 be too large for your festival ball shell to were the space between the mortal and wall would be too much of a gap and then the mortar wouldn't have enough pressure behind it to shoot the 100+ feet in the air.

If you check out the pictures in the Michigan folder in the new picture forum you will see my setup for the mortar rack. I used 1.91 tubes and put festival balls in them and they worked just fine. When they are in the tube, they are gonna go, just don't put them in 2.5 inch racks or you will have a problem, lol! Pyroboom.com is a great place and they all sell 1.91 (mainly). half was festival and the other half were excals.

And both shot well out of the 1.91? I just noticed that after my shoot I had to clean out the tubes also because all of the powder residue made it harder to get the mortars to go down

yep, I had no problem with both. the festival balls went about 100 feet in the air and the excals just took off. I always clean mine out after every shoot I do So I do not run into that problem.

I was reloading my tubes because I didn't make enough racks for my shoot. Mistake on my part.

1.91 is correct for Excals and basically most canister shells.

I have over 150 of the green 1.81 hdpe and about 100 of the orange 1.91. the exaliburs have to be pushed down in the 1.81 most of the time, but I have never had one get stuck. it is usually just a gentle push on them to reach the bottom. If you use all canister shells, I would recommend 1.91. I would not recommend 1.91 if you are firing those double and triple peanut shells. I had several of them not lift very high. Some of them even came back down to the ground with 1.91. With 1.81 they flew with no problem. I was also told that 1.75 inches is not the maximum size for consumer shells. It is 50mm which is close to 1.75 but actually a little bigger. Different companies then make slightly different size shells but all are considered 1.75. I do not know for sure but it seems to make sense.

I plan on getting 1.81 and 1.91 then just so I can fire both. I want to try a finally with all festival balls to see how it goes so I will probably make three 30 shot racks for my finale with 1.81 and make two 30 shot racks with 1.91. I have two years to figure it out but I don't want to buy to many extra of one size but then it gives me the excuse to buy more shells.

I think the festival balls won't get the lift they need but screw it I'll try one when I get home to see.

I have 150 1.91 hdpe guns. I have shot thousands of festival balls and canister shells including excals out of them. I have had NO problems.

I use both 1.81 and 1.91. I shot a case of the liberty bell shell assortments from kellner's out of the 1.91 and it was dangerous. The doubles and triples would not fly high enough at all, most of the breaks went off on the ground. They just would not lift enough. I then put them in the 1.81 and they worked perfectly. If your trying to get the best lift I think the 1.81 is the way to go if the shell fits. Something else to consider. If you store your pipes outside in the winter, they will be a tighter fit if it is cold. Last new years the 1.81 that worked fine in july, was too tight in January. That is why the next time I bought mortars, I went with 1.91.

Thanks Dave, I wasn't sure if I could do that or not.

I usually only fire in the summer. In connecticut fireworks are illegal so I get away with it in the summer. I buy three different size shells. The canister shells would be 1.91 the festival balls would be 1.81 and then I buy these other ball shells called super magnum by world class. They have a decent break but I beleive will only fit the 1.91.

I thought the actual legal diameter was 1.75 inch for all consumer shells. Hmm... is this just for ball shells?

I thought I read somewhere, that it is 50mm which is equal to about 1.9. Different manufacturers will then make the shells at numerous sizes, but we usually just say they are 1.75. I am not sure though.

Ill have to agree... I cant see all the different manufacturers having the EXACT same sizes!
