I know this question is probably getting old! However, I have built them before for consumer shells. Now the issue is that I'm building for bigger shells. Do most of you just use pine boards or am I better off putting plywood on top and osb on bottom side rails. Does this really help at all? I see a lot of your racks just have plain old pine boards on side. Another question I have is for my 3 inch shells should I put spacers in between mortars or not?

For the 3"....I would do spacers in between the mortars. But I dont suggest you make the spacers run the length of the mortars down from the top. If there happens to be a blowout....that extra wood would just cause more shrapnel.
Some of the racks we use for one of the companies I work for... they actually use a 1" thick spacer board completely blocking off every tube from the next. That extra board also means extra weight.

Do they use plywood at all or just 1x construction?

People use OSB on bottom for simple fact it comes apart easier than Plywood...
Spacers are used by people for one...keeping racks same length be it 2.5" up to 6". It also makes it easier when hand lighting when there is gaps between the leaders

We use plywood top and bottom. Plus you can see the board spacers running the length.
