I came across one of the many new very stupid reality shows on tv last night--Hillbilly Blood.

These two guys had some tree stumps that needed removing so, after failing to make a stump grinder from a motorcycle frame they decided to "blow them up".

Stating that it was difficult to get black powder because of "government regulations" they decided to make their own. They used bat guana [which they said was "high in nitrates"], charcoal & sulfur--then added some moonshine to "give it a kick". First stump had a piece of green visco about 10" long & knocked them both to the ground [supposedly] as they were running away. Seeing their powder worked, they then proceeded to go on a "stump blowing up" spree.
All I can say is ---"gimme a break"!

I know way too much about this crap... I used to sell the stuff as an organic fertilizer.

Bat guano (not guana) has been used as a source of nitrate for hundreds of years. Its a very valuable fertilizer - enough so that Thomas Jefferson commissioned pirates & ships to go to Peru to steal bat guano for use on Jefferson's plantation. The nitrates in bat and cave bird guano have been used to make gunpowder for about as long. "Fresh" guano (like 5-50 years) is high in nitrogen, fossilized guano (highly sought after) is high in phosphorus. The seabird guano in Peru is valuable enough that the Peru military guards its mining.

At least the hillbillies did not use thermite. The stupid-people reality TV shows are going a long way (especially "Moonshiners") so show the improper uses of thermite and ensure that prohibition of it in some areas is not too far off. They would have a very hard time prohibiting bat crap.

Dave - check out the bats exhibit @ Pgh Zoo sometime. You have never smelled anything like that before ! Nasty !
Yes it's used to grow various plants for it's ideal N-P-K ratio compared to other fertilizers I hear .

I bet if I bring some of the Bat Guano to Kellner's Fireworks demo in April , along with some aluminum and sulfur PyroJoe can make a firecracker with it. LOL

Bats are so maligned, and they are a beautifull and beneficial creature.: Kind of like crows. The world would be a lot dirtier without them.D

---and Hillbillies wouldn't be able to make Black Powder. So, yes, they are useful. Haven't found a use for crow droppings yet----------
