On New Year’s Eve Dubai’s skies will come alive with a six-minute fireworks display choreographed across the whole of The Palm Jumeirah and the islands of The World as the city attempts to set another world record. The show will cover 99.4km of seafront and feature 450,000 fireworks in 400 locations. The world record attempt will conclude with a 15-minute display covering a one-kilometre stretch of the Jumeirah beach.
Massive preparations are under way for the record attempt, and Khaleej Times got a sneak peek at what’s happening behind the scenes at a restricted site in Palm Jumeirah, where police and security teams guard a large consignment of firework shells and mortars.
On site, hundreds of workers were busy connecting circuits and following design schemes for the show.
Pyrotechnic experts from ‘Fireworks by Grucci’ have been commissioned and the site tour unveiled the full extent of preparations undertaken by the show organisers. More than 40 trailers have been loaded with firework shells and buffer zones have been created for safety. Each truck has been loaded with several racks of firework shells, which will be filled with live elements and connected to circuits before being despatched to different areas of Palm Jumeirah for the show. The Palm crescent will also light up with floating platoons used as launch platforms.
Dubai’s attempt to break the record will be closely watched by adjudicators from Guinness World Records. Kuwait holds the current world record for the largest firework display with 77,282 fireworks used to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of its constitution.

Below are a few videos Grucci released about the Dubai display. I have a email in to someone connected to the project in hopes I can get some of the behind the scene details. My guess is they are going to be very selective about what they release. I would really enjoy hearing from a technician on the shoot site. If anyone out there reading this is involved with the display, please feel free to email at pyrotalk@gmail.com .

It looks like access to the area will be heavily restricted New Years Eve night. Look at what the people that live there have to go through. Apparently when you live there you are part of a residency agreement that requires you comply with events like this.
Access to Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah will be blocked on New Year’s Eve as Dubai attempts to break the world fireworks record.
Dubai is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for "the world’s largest firework display”, across the Palm Jumeirah and The World islands. The six minute display is expected to cover 100km of seafront and feature 400,000 fireworks.
However, the plans are set to cause huge disruption, with road closures starting from 8am on New Year’s Eve. From that time, anyone entering the Palm will require a special pass, and no deliveries will be permitted after 5pm.
Residents have been told that they will be given just four passes per household and only one vehicle pass per household. All guests entering the Palm – including thousands of people who had been expected to attend parties – will need to pre-register for their passes.
“We have been told to go with our tenancy contracts and the provide ID for anyone we are inviting or they won’t be allowed in. It’s absurd. This is our house, we should be allowed to invite whoever we like,” said one resident.
Other residents spoken to by Arabian Business said they were concerned that with only one vehicle pass, some family members may not be able to get back onto the development.
“Three people in my family work and drive but we are getting just one pass. I don’t know how we will all get back in,” said another resident.
It is understood that no access at all will be permitted onto the development for four hours, starting at 9pm on New Year’s Eve. All the restrictions will not be lifted in full until the following day at 6am.

An extraordinary extravaganza lies in wait for residents who will witness the live spectacle as Dubai puts forth its ambitious plan to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest firework display.
As part of Dubai’s commitment to excellence, the city is coming together to set a phenomenal pyrotechnic record on December 31 that aims to light up the city in an extraordinary show that will showcase a six-minute display choreographed across the whole of The Palm Jumeirah and The World Islands.
Over 200 expert pyro technicians, 400 firing locations and 100 computers networked to control the show down to the millisecond will be in position.
The world record-breaking attempt will cover a distance of approximately 100km of seafront and feature over 400,000 fireworks in a series of dramatic imagery designed exclusively for the event and set to a specially choreographed musical soundtrack.
The breath taking display, which includes a ‘Flying Falcon’, ‘UAE Flag’ and a ‘Sunrise’ scene, will begin shortly before midnight and showcase the city as one of the world’s premier locations for the global community to visit.
Visible from numerous vantage points across Dubai, all hotels on The Palm Jumeirah will be hosting events to celebrate their involvement in the Dubai World Record 2014 attempt.
Programme for the night
Over 400,000 fireworks will be placed along 100kms of seafront to achieve this world record.
Aside from The Palm Jumeirah, fireworks will also be set off from the seven continents on The World Islands in celebration of and an invitation to the global community to come to Dubai during the journey to World Expo 2020.
A Flying Falcon will open the programme, leading the countdown in English and Arabic digits – using the exclusive GrucciSkyEtching technology.
The display features seven 24-inch shells that will rise 600m above the seven World Island Continents, each spreading a canopy over 700m wide.
A UAE flag will be presented at 225m wide x 130m high – using a patented PixelBurst technology that uses embedded computer chips for precision firing. At 29,250 square meters, it will be the largest pyrotechnic flag ever presented.
Grucci has designed a ‘Sunrise’ scene that will awaken the World across nearly 10kms wide.
The fireworks performance will be choreographed to music composed specifically for this event, but inspired by a local song
The performance, which has taken over 5,000 plus man-days to complete the attempt, will last six minutes in total, with over 400 firing locations.
The fireworks specially handcrafted for the programme in the USA, China and Spain.
Traffic management
As revealed earlier, restrictions will apply in terms of traffic movement and access to The Palm Jumeirah on December 31, which will include a pass system to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors.
Residents can use their passes to bring in their guests, providing they follow the permitted access timetable.
From 8am to 9pm, access to event pass holders in their personal vehicles and passengers in taxis holding event pass.
From 9pm to 10.30pm, access to passengers in taxis holding event pass only.
Between 10.30pm and 1am access will be stopped for the purpose of safety and security. However, provisions will be made only for emergency situations.
As parking space on the Fronds is limited, residents are advised to limit the number of guest vehicles to a maximum of five vehicles per villa. Each vehicle will have a car pass.
Walking around The Palm Jumeirah will be restricted from 10.30pm onwards to ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the show.

In yet another attempt at a Guinness World Record, Dubai will dazzle the world with the largest fireworks display ever on New Year’s Eve.
Where will it happen?
Palm Jumeirah island and The World islands will be the centre of attractions this New Year’s Eve as 400 locations in around the islands have been earmarked to launch the spectacular display.
It will take just 60 seconds for 200 pyro-technicians in Dubai to break the world record for the largest fireworks, currently held by Kuwait since 2012, when to celebrate its 50th national day, it fired 77,282 shots of fireworks spread across five kilometres, a spectacle that lasted for 64 minutes.
How long will it last?
Designed by US-based firm ‘Fireworks by Grucci’ - who also designed the fireworks display for the launch of Atlantis in 2008 - Dubai’s spectacle will only last for only six minutes, but it will contain 400,000 shots of fireworks that will be synchronised with music.
What will the show be like?
The show will begin with a ‘Flying Falcon’ doing rounds of The World islands, leading the countdown for the New Year spectacle.
The display will include never seen before elements like a 225 metre wide and 130 metre high UAE flag, conjured through fireworks and special effects that will adorn the Dubai sky. The flag will be another world record attempt for the largest pyrotechnic flag ever.
The event that will mark the culmination of a landmark year for Dubai, which saw the city winning the hosting rights of World Expo 2020, will culminate with the final salvo of fireworks that will conjure up a ‘Sunrise’ scene, lighting up the skies for around 10 kilometres.
What is the scope of the show?
The spectacle will be spread across 100 kilometres. At least 450,000 explosive shells, connected to a network of more than 100 computers, will be used to put up the show. In another regional record, seven 660 mm shells will be used to fire the main rounds of fireworks, each shot spreading over 700 metres wide.
How will the record be measured?
The Guinness World Record officials will be on the field to measure the scale of the event during the show. Though, the current record will be broken in 60 seconds, the show will last for six minutes as Guinness Records criteria requires the show to last for a minimum of five minutes to qualify for the world record.
The officials will also calculate the number of shots fired, range of the shots and the total distance the entire display covers.
What went into planning?
Around nine months of planning has gone into the design and preparations of the show, with some of the fireworks specially designed for the show and shipped from the US. Technicians have been working on the field for the last three weeks, with 450,000 shells prepared and mounted on more than 60 heavy trailers.
The shells will be placed at 400 locations in Palm Jumeirah islands and The World islands both on land on water, using floating platoons.
Technicians are currently giving final touches to the explosive-laden shells, before they are transported to different locations on the Palm Island as well as The World islands.
