THERE will zero tolerance for fireworks this festive season.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer, SPCA Inspector Roland Fivaz said he would not stand for any bangs as New Year was not a religious celebration.

‘Anyone setting off fireworks will be charged under the Animal Protection Act.This is not legal and people will be prosecuted,’ he said.

Empangeni has been plagued with fireworks this year and the SPCA has bore the brunt of traumatised animals.

As we approach the holiday season, uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue Chief Andrew Vuma has reiterated the municipal legislation surrounding the discharge of fireworks.

As per the City’s Possession and Discharge of Fireworks Bylaws, a person may not use or discharge any fireworks in or from any enclosed place where domesticated animals are present, or in or from any public place without prior written permission from the Inspector of Explosives.

The Chief Fire Officer may for religious, cultural, ceremonial or festive purposes, give written permission for the controlled discharge of fireworks by a registered pyro technician at an approved place and date, but is subject to such conditions as the Chief Fire Officer may deem appropriate.
