The American Pyrotechnic Association and its members are donating a fireworks display to say thank you to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania cinematography students that helped produce one of the new APA safety videos. Gregg Smith and Vince Terrizzi and Doug Taylor are the APA leads on the project. Pyrotecnico, Zambelli, Starfire, American Fireworks, and other APA members are donating / assisting with the video production as well as the community display on Oct. 31

Every once in a great while, the stars align, the universe comes into balance, and the resulting harmony brings forth this: a big fireworks show set to music. And with kettle corn and funnel cakes.

So if you like any or all of the above, consider heading over to White Township’s Mack Park, where all three are to be had on Oct. 31, courtesy of the American Pyrotechnics Association and the Indiana Lions Club.

The fireworks show and events surrounding it are an outgrowth of a project between the association and IUP’s Center for Media Production and Research, a part of the communications media department.

Through the project, the center and IUP students are producing an association training video meant for new pyrotechnics professionals and for those whose job it is to monitor that activity.

The association has wanted to update the video — the current one dates to sometime around 1995. And when it began looking around for help, Vince Terrizzi and his family-owned Starfire Corp., of Northern Cambria, suggested it turn to the university.

The suggestion resulted in a partnership between the two, and they’ve been working together for about a year now, said department chairman Mark Piwinsky.

He said that having completed preproduction, they are finally ready to begin filming, which takes place over several days next week.

The video is comprehensive; it takes viewers through all the steps of a show, from packing fireworks to shipping them to unloading them and setting them up, according to Julie Heckman, the association’s executive director.

Since they were going to have to go through all the motions of setting up for a show for purposes of the video, the association decided to do one for real. And if they’re going stage a show, then why not make it big and ask a charitable group to build a fundraiser around it.

“It’s going to be quite different than your typical Fourth of July show,” said Heckman, adding that it includes fireworks donations from five or six companies and some custom-made pieces.

To surround the show, the Indiana Lions Club has put together an afternoon of activities to precede the show, billing it as a Fun Fest. Activities begin at 3 p.m. with a car show at the park. Lions Club member Jerry Boucher has asked that area car and motorcycle enthusiasts consider parking their rides at the show to help make it a success.

The entry fee for showing a vehicle is $5.

Boucher also will be spinning oldies records from 3 to 7 p.m. There also will be concession stands. Kettle corn, funnel cakes and hot dogs are on the menu.

Local variety band Hiram & the Walkers will take the stage at 7 p.m. at the park’s grandstand area.

The fireworks are set to begin sometime around 8 p.m.

No rumor - it is true. I talked to Vinney this evening about this great event. He said his family has been doing the annual July 4th show at Mack park since 1970 (or early 70's - too many salutes pounding the air at the time he said this - :) )
Family and I may venture down that way on the 31st - I have family there - so good excuse - see family then take them to a great show - all is grand! :)

Seven of the top pyrotechnic compa*nies in the United States put aside their individual company logos and donned American Pyrotechnic Association shirts to give Indiana a fireworks display like they’d never seen before.

Julie Heckman has been with the APA for 25 years and was thrilled to see the companies come together for the oc*casion.

“This is not your average Fourth of July show,” Heckman said.

The process of setting up for the 17-minute show started 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Heckman said they were prepared to shoot 11,000 fireworks, choreographed to music. There were three different platforms, which gave the show a fan effect and shot off fireworks constantly and simultaneously along to the music.

On Wednesday night, they covered the 280 mortar racks because they heard there was a chance of rain.

They first covered each with alu*minum, then plastic and then a tarp. Rain wouldn’t stop them from having the show, and Heckman said that they could just shoot right through all three layers.

Each firework shot comes out of the canister at about 350 miles per hour. Mims, comets, jareds and six pieces are just some of the types of fireworks fea*tured in these displays.

The fireworks shot up 500 feet, which they determined by measuring the perimeter of Mack Park field.

The finale alone was 2,300 shots, which could be seen as far as the Hadley Union Building.

Kevin Fritschler, owner of American Fireworks Display, said he loves working with all the other companies, and this was by far his favorite place to shoot off fireworks.

The company is based in Oxford, N.Y., and has done fireworks all over the country.

He brought with him Jeremy Wake*field, his lead pyrotechnician.

Heckman called the groups artists because of the knowledge and care that goes into the show.

She said they know exactly how long each shot takes from shoot off until it hangs in the air.

It looks like a video was produced in association with this donated fireworks display. I may have to investigate if the video will be an American Pyrotechnic Association member video only. I would love to play a copy on the forums. I may have to send a request out to see if I can get it.

American Pyrotechnics Association Gives Back to the Local Community by Donating a Spectacular Fireworks Display on October 31, 2013, at Mack Park Fairgrounds, Indiana, Pennsylvania
Bethesda, MD, October 30, 2013 --- The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) began production of its new “Celebrate Safely” video this week in Indiana, PA, with the assistance of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, (IUP) Center for Media Production and Research. The video will serve as a training tool for pyrotechnicians as well as enforcement officials who have oversight of the permitting and set up of public fireworks displays nationwide.
The APA approached the IUP Center about creating the new safety video for APA last year and enlisted the Center and students to participate in every aspect of the video production including script editing, developing the story boards for capturing the video images, selection of props, computer animation as well as narration. The video is comprehensive in nature and will address all steps involved in producing a fireworks display. Due to the importance of the video as a training tool for so many individuals and enforcement officials nationally, APA member companies stepped up to the plate to work in collaboration to ensure that the video reflects the real life story and images of a proper fireworks display set up and show execution.
The APA leadership decided to take the safety video one step farther by offering a “fireworks spectacular” for the community, free of charge, while IUP student videographers document best safety practices of the setup and execution of a fireworks show. “We are pleased to give back to IUP and the local community for IUP’s assistance with our important video project and what better way for us to do that than to produce a spectacular fireworks display to support the Indiana Lions Club first Fun Fest event on Halloween at Mack Park which will also benefit the local United Way”, said Julie L. Heckman, Executive Director of the APA.
