An Akron man is now dealing with the long term effects of a serious fireworks accident.

Kevin Skubic, 34, was doing what he did before every July 4th celebration, buying fireworks from an acquaintance, Wayne Jones, 66. Someone Skubic had bought fireworks from in the past.

News Channel 5 reports that after the transaction, Skubic took his bag of 50 quarter sticks and walked back to his truck where he glanced down and noticed it was on fire.

Just seconds later, the fireworks exploded.

"After the bang went off it was just super loud. This eye was sealed shut I couldn't open it and see. I could see out of my left eye and see that my arm was hanging off" says Skubic.

The father of two suffered a number of injuries including shrapnel and flash burns and damage to his retina that will effect his vision. The explosion also tore off half his left arm, and burned and broke much of his right.

Skubic is at Akron General Medical Center recovering from his accident.

Wayne Jones, the man Skubic bought the fireworks from is looking at criminal charges including manufacturing explosives, unlawful possession of dangerous ordinance, illegal assembly of chemicals/explosives and possession of criminal tools.

Jones is currently out of jail on $5,000 dollar bond and tells News Channel 5, "I think they're blaming me for what happened to him, but he's a grown man. I didn't have anything to do with it."

Skubic says Jones is trying to make up a cover story for the illegal fireworks.

"I take responsibility for what I bought and I'm living a different life from now on" concludes Skubic.

Jones is scheduled to appear in Akron Municipal Court on Friday.

NewsChannel 5 cameras caught up with 66-year-old Wayne Jones, who said he was shocked by what happened outside of his Grand Avenue home Monday night.

"I think they're blaming me for what happened to him, but he's a grown man. I didn't have anything to do with it," Jones explained.

Akron Police say Jones has been charged with illegal assembly of chemicals/explosives, possession of criminal tools, manufacturing explosives, and other charges. Jones posted a $5,000 bond.

I personally think its bullshit dude is playing the victim. I'm sure he knew they were illegal before he bought them and knew they were dangerous! And his story about the bag catching fire sounds like it defies everything I know about flash powders. If static or some kind of spontaneous combustion happened, you wouldn't have even seen it coming. My guess is Skubic wanted to do something kool with one of his 50 quarter sticks. Man I know its hard to find m-80's now-a-days, but who wants to pay an arm and a leg for them!;)

Sounds like a bunch of bs on this kids part and also on the guy who sold them he should have made sure they was more secure when packed if static E played a part. as for the kid he is fos he been buying for years same guy come on he knew what he was getting and should have been responsible in handling them. i personally think they are both to blame more so the kid than the guy making them but in the end something don't make sense but we may never know the truth.

"""Man I know its hard to find m-80's now-a-days, but who wants to pay an arm and a leg for them!""" I couldn't agree more LOL.

I agree with the posts above me, just seems like this guy did something really stupid and is taking on the victim role.
I have little compassion for these kind of people.

Jones is currently out on bond. His next hearing is scheduled for July 31 at 8:30 a.m. in Summit County Common Pleas Court.
Police said they found scales, fuses, funnels, nitrates and powder inside the home. A 65-year-old man who lives there was charged with manufacturing explosives and other violations. Neighbors say he put on a display every Fourth of July.

When Skubic was leaving Jones' house, he noticed that the bag holding the explosives was on fire as he approached his pickup truck parked in front of the man's house.
'When I threw the bag, it just blew up right in my face,' he told NewsNet5, the ABC affiliate in his hometown of Akron. 'I looked down and my arm was hanging off. I didn't want to go into shock. I just started praying right away.'

Those are his words now you guys are saying he did something really stupid could be,... but right outside the place where he bought them ? The best i can guess he is a smoker needed both hands to hold the bag cigarette in his mouth lit ash drops in the bag Boom .

His trunk was popped open he was close to getting them inside may be a static charge from him touching the trunk ? In any case the bag he said was on fire not sure if that's true but he was close to leaving really close .

although messing around with "quarter sticks" isn't really fireworks. it's small bombs, really . it sucks that that guy lost his hand/partial eyesight/hearing but he wasn't playing with consumer fireworks .

First of all was the bag plastic!? If so, Real damn smart! Second of all how the hell did the bag catch fire? The most important thing here is the fact that Fireworks (class c) and ground salutes are not the same thing at all! This is sad what happened to the guy and the message that fireworks are dangerous is BS. He should have said that illegal explosives are dangerous.
