Pyros 2013 Season

I do not believe the 2013 television show “Pyros” is playing in United States this year. I noticed someone in Canada posted some of the new episodes.

I did not know the new season is playing the Dutch countries. I thought it was only playing in Canada.

I saw these on You Tube about 2 weeks ago--I have to say I couldn't imagine the extreme level of frustration the guys had to endure in the CONGO episode! But they managed to pull off both shows & keep the big guy's compound from burning down. Always an interesting program!

Your correct Dave it is only playing in Canada at the moment but the uploader somehow downloaded it out off canada.

Like the Congo episode, i have seen lots of fireworks footage but not so much from africa so this was an interresting episode.

Eric grew up around explosives, firing off his first show before he had a driver’s license. His father’s business, Ampleman, was one of the first fireworks companies in Canada, so blowing things up was just normal routine for the Cardinal family. While Eric may be highly skilled at the technical side of fireworks production he is also playful. He works hard, but when the work is done, Eric is the bon vivant of the group, sometimes to the irritation of Maude, the company’s General Manager who is business first, playtime later. Occasionally, the two come to blows figuring out who’s the boss, but it seldom ends in disaster.

Sebastien started with Fiatlux in 2000 and is now one of the partners, but that doesn’t mean he sticks to the office. Seb gets his hands dirty like the rest of them. The toughest show he’s ever done was in 2002 for a Saint-Jean-Baptiste event in Quebec City when pounding rain and wind soaked the show. Another tough show was in 2004 when the wind changed direction and flaming plastic debris started drifting onto the crowd. Then, the same year, a big charge exploded as he was loading it, whizzing past his head and knocking over a friend standing beside him. When he’s not putting on a show, Seb is charged with developing new business for GFA and despite the pressure, he comes off as a fun-loving, big kid at heart.

Philippe knows that staying successful and scoring the biggest contracts in the world is all about being the best and the boldest and sometimes, this also means being the craziest. Philippe has recently garnered a lucrative contract with an African company that takes him into some of the most dangerous pyrotechnic territory in the world. “In Africa...it's not safety first...it's safety third: first money, then firepower, and finally, safety.” This often means driving trucks packed full of explosives through crowded cities and using old-school techniques such as hand-firing with torches because the safer technology isn’t available. Philippe will do whatever is necessary to ensure the crowd and the client is satisfied with the show.

MAUDE FURTADO – GENERAL MANAGER, GROUP FIATLUX AMPLEMAN (GFA)

As the daughter of a Canadian pyrotechnic pioneer, Maude was born into gunpowder and grew up as a “mortar-monkey” working behind the scenes at her father’s biggest shows. Maude was eighteen when she fired her first big show. In the minutes leading up to the show, Maude's hands were shaking so bad, she could barely start the ignition systems. When the show finally ended she passed out cold from exhaustion. She says, “The only thing I can compare the experience to is giving birth.” Since finding her career home with GFA, Maude has focused on building the company’s reputation on the world stage. Her drive to win critically acclaimed competitions is so strong that she’ll “blow” tens of thousands of dollars in extra explosives just for the taste of victory.

Hugues has been working in Pyro for over 24 years. He got his start by accident when at 17, and working at a convenience store, one of his coworkers happened to know someone working at Fiatlux and asked Hugues to help out on a show. Hugues was hooked! Decades of experience, working in almost every aspect of the business, has given him immense knowledge but Hugues recognizes that every show is different, and differences mean challenges. The highlight of Hugues’ career was doing Pyro for Paul McCartney and being at his side on stage while he was performing in Quebec City. “There’s something incredible about having a member of the Beatles singing all of the classics 20 feet away from you and being able to say that you are at work!”

BENOIT BERTHELET – DESIGNER, GROUP FIATLUX AMPLEMAN (GFA)

Big hearted and emotional, Benoit is the most senior employee at GFA; and, as a true artist, he takes things personally. Benoit got his start in pyro while going to school to be a stage technician. One of the shows called for pyrotechnics and when he made his first “pop” he was hooked. “It’s an obsession,” he says. As a designer, it’s his job to find the spirit behind each show and create a story with music to match. It’s sometimes challenging to tell a story with fireworks, but Benoit is passionate about what he does, comparing it to composing music or painting the sky

Watched them both last night. Was very sorry to hear Benoit was hurt last year. Those were some nasty scars he had. But, like he said, he is alive. It is a serious reminder that anyone can get hurt in this business.
