I have recently bought DR9 for some of my racks and also purchased some excals now they seem really snug in the tube if anyone has fired an excal out of DR9 with no problems please let me know because i want to know if this thing is even gonna come out of the tube at all before i start loading a rack full of them thank you

If it went in it will come out. You should use dr11 for cans.

DR11 for any cans is correct. DR9 I used only a couple times and that was will ball shells

Not trying to pick on you, but if you were concerned about the snugness of the shell in the tube and why didn'tt you load just one and then shoot the darn thing in a open area with plenty of room and look at the results. No offense intended, but if I were concerned about something like, that I would apply a little common sense to the problem before I loaded a 50 shot rack and saying "well, we will see what happens".

with all my racks i use 1.75" HDPE Mortar Tube DR11, 15" Length (1.91" ID). I only shoot 1.4 shells cans and balls with 100% flight out of tube,with no problem.

wow first off i am not able to just go in my back yard and light fireworks off because i live in a state where they are illegel, i am going out of state to light this thing off and trust me i do have common sense i was going to light one off before i lit the 50 off

No offense dude but I'm not so sure about the common sense. You just posted on an open forum to the world that you have illegal fireworks ready to be shot in an illegal state out of the wrong tubes without a permit or license. I'm still waiting to here why you even posted this. You asked a question, had an answer within 1 hour and you still loaded 50 tubes up. Here is the problem, if the can is to tight it will still come out. It just wont come out the top of the tube. The one you fire may come out ok. They may all come out straight, maybe only 25 will come out straight. The point is, the safest size for cans is Dr11. Unfortunately you want to play the odds because that is what you have. Thats not ok when your dealing with something that can kill you or someone else. Its guys like you that give this industry a bad rap when something goes wrong.

I would love to know what Dr-9 and DR-11 means.

It is the difference of the Inside Diameter of the tube:
DR11 = 1.91" Inner Diameter (ID)
DR9 = 1.81" Inner Diameter (ID)
As was stated by other posters, DR-11 for canisters, DR-9 usually used with Ball Shells.

It is the ratio of pipe diameter to wall thickness

I would love to know what Dr-9 and DR-11 means.

with can shells DR-11 is the safest size to use,in all kits that have HPDE tubes are DR-11.now some ball shells will work fine also,but your cheap ball kits are smaller DR-9. it best to go with one size. in a lot of daves video's he mentions to go with same size when using 1.4 shells so you do not get mixed up when loading your shells. to small of sell in biger tube will not get a safe height.

AD, didn't mean to offend you with the "common sense" remark, but after rereading this thread ,I believe you can see why I said it. I think Shell S said it best. There is a wealth of info here and if you ask a question and then imply that you are going to ignore what is offered, why ask the question. I am in my mid 60's and love fireworks, but I want everybody to be safe. For what it is worth, I'll leave you with this old paraphrased cliche, "THERE ARE OLD PYROS AND THERE ARE BOLD PYROS, BUT THERE 'AIN'T' MANY OLD, BOLD PYROS.

I always measure the tubes that come with the shells to make sure what size mortar to use. The larger percentage of shells are designed for dr11 mortars. P.S. play nice lets not turn this into pyro-u please.

okay, I just learned this, so bear with me. The "dr" on dr-11 and dr-9 and soforth is actually "sdr", which is an acronym for Standard detention ratio. so you could have two sdr-9 pipes with completely different diameters and wall thicknesses because it is not a specific measurement. here is a link that explains it simply. http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/sdr-standard-dimension-ratio-d_318.html So a sdr-9 pipe with an OD of 2 inches would have approx .22" wall thickness, and aprox 1.55" ID. But a sdr-9 pipe with an OD of 9 inches would have a 1" thick wall and a 7" ID. I found this interesting.

1.91" Mortar Tubes (most common size)
What mortars should i buy?
Well first off there are two sizes for consumer mortars DR-9 (1.81" ID) and a DR-11 (1.91" ID). The DR11 mortars are the most common size and can be used with all consumer shells. The DR9 is used for thin canister shells and festival balls.
The second question would be should i get a 12" or 15" mortar? To be 100% safe you should go with a 12" mortar. Some say that a 15" mortar will give you extra height out of your shells, but you will run into the problem that your fuse may be too short and will have to add a small piece of visco fuse to extend the fuse that is already attached to your shell.
There are also smaller 1.2" and 1.5" shells on the market.

Nice post pyro man. Could not have said it better myself. Dumb me bought 15" ones and didnt realize it. So I have 30 - 15" mortars now. but thinking I may use them just for mines or canister shells. Will just have to add some fuse to them.

for those 15's- piggyback them, then your fuse will be long enough. or cut a notch in the top and stick your fuse in there, light it and when it burns the shell will drop to the bottom
