Matching donations for fireworks displays. Many fireworks displays are often done with sponsors. In tough economic times cities often try to cut fireworks budgets or seek support from local business. This video is an example.

Good heavens... "The non-profit organization had raised $31,000 from the community, but that fell far short of what was needed to light up the sky on the 4th of July."
Maybe I live a sheltered life in Iowa.... but here, $31K would afford a nice commercial firework show. Assuming they had $56K total, that's a very nice show. Either they're doing an elaborate pyromusical, or somebody's lining their pockets pretty good on that deal. Perhaps there's only one display company with a monopoly on the market. That millionaire said he wouldn't want the kids to have a 4th of July without fireworks... but those kids would probably be just as tickled to see a $15,000 hand-lit show. This attitude that we always have to be "bigger and better than last year" makes me nervous. Sooner or later, this model is no longer sustainable -- financially and otherwise.
