VADODARA: A devastating fire has gutted most of the temporary firecrackers market, set up in the polo grounds, here at Vadodara, three days ahead of Diwali. Some people are reported to be injured though no death has been reported so far. About 20 fire tenders were rushed to the site to douse the fire that started at around 3.50 pm.
No information on the exact cause of fire was immediately available, but eye witnesses said flames spread fast and furious with firecrackers setting off in all directions, and within 20 minutes, nearly 50 temporary shops were ablaze. Reportedly, about 150 persons had set shops there for selling crackers, although, no official word was available on how many shops had been granted licences. A huge cloud of white smoke could be seen stretching from the ground to the sky at the spot, which was visible from all corners of the city. Several vehicles parked inside the ground also caught fire when burning crackers fell on them.

Collector Vinod Rao said about four persons suffering from suffocation due to smoke had been rushed to SSG hospital, where doctors had been already alerted to receive some injured. Rao described the situation "under control". Though the fire has been largely brought under control, fire tenders are still at the spot dousing small fires.

The police has cordoned off all approaches to the polo ground to relief and rescue operations. Fire tenders were moving frequently around the huge ground to bring the fire under control for over an hour. Diwali shoppers in old city area first heard hundreds of fire crackers booming which was followed by a cloud of white smoke, which alerted them to the unfortunate accident in the making.

Perhaps our India friends can comment on this video. Is this fireworks accident in Valsad the same incident described above or is it another event occurring with these temporary fireworks markets?
