I thought I would start a thread on this since I have not found anything on this forum or on any other site on the internet.
What I want to know is:
The measurements of mortar racks from 2.5" to 8", as I am going to build all mine.
I just want to know the cut lengths and 2x? sizes.
I seen the videos of consumer racks, but I can not find anything on the pro size racks. I know basically they are all 4' wide. So, any other info would be awesome.
Thanks in advance.

I was looking around for the same. I bought a few different sized mortars (2.5, 4, 5, 6) so I could figure out and build some different size racks, but I won't have time to get to it for a little while.
But I'll post what I come up with when I do, if you haven't found the info elsewhere first.

Honestly it all depends one where ya want to go. Some places make all racks the same size no matter what size mortar. That way when nailing or putting together your show it is easier

Just remember with 1.3 racks your spacer between the tubes should be at least half the diameter of the tube. I know some companies use the "10" reference for easy ID at a glance of what size the guns are--ie- 3" would have 10 to a rack, 4" would have 6 to a rack [size of gun + number of guns---4+6=10], 5" would be 5 guns to a rack[5" + 5 guns=10], 6"would be 4 guns to a rack[6"+ 4 guns = 10], 8", 10", & 12"---get the shovel out! LOL 16" get the back hoe out!!! & call me so I can watch it go up! and the guns are stenciled so you don't drop a 2 1/2" shell into a 3" gun, or a 3" shell into a 4" gun.
4 feet seems like a common standard...but you can build anything you want.

Yes, I was going to build standard 4ft, and I like that "10" rule of thumb. But what about the width of the 2x's that the tubes sit on top of?
Its almost looking like:
3" tubes are on top of a 2x3
4" on top of 2x4
5" & 6" on 2x6
Is this correct? If so, I think it just solved what I wanted to know.

I am not a rack builder but it seems like there would be some variations depending on the mortars and type of wood you are using. Many people us all sorts of scrap wood to build these things. I have so many of those fiberglass 1.75 mortars left over from artillery shell kits I should go to Home Depot and buy some scrap wood just to experiment building one.
If I did build, one I would not invest too much in it in the event it blows apart you would get your feeling hurt.

I know what you mean Dave. But its cool, because the demolitions I do at work... we find all kinds of scrap 2x's that I can throw in our truck to bring home! :)

Rack example...
The 2.5" tube has an outside diameter of about 3". You will need to rip a 2x4.
3" and 4" i used 2x6
5" and 6" i used 2x8
1/2 plywood cut in strips with the gain...3.5" on the bottom...4" on the top of the rack
I use high strength wood glue. Exterior deck screws.
Im currently building racks and should make videos.

Rack example...
3" and 4" i used 2x6
.
3" is just a 2X4 no ripping is required.

be sure to look at NFPA 1123 to ensure that your equipment is compliant.

You may want to limit your 6's to just 3 tubes per rack to save on your back

I have a few for some fiberglass guns I just built up if you need them. I like you could not find any plans for fiberglass so I just started building from scratch. I found the "rule of ten" works great for 4 inch or 5 inch (i'm the lone wolf here) BUT if you will want finale chains that's a different story. You'll need to reconsider 4 inch and personally, I didn't even consider the rule of 10 for 3 inch. I went with 10 because I am not currently planning on finale chains with 3 inch.

With 2.5" and 3" and you rack them in 10's. On 4's I've seen them up to 6 placed in a rack or 5 and 5" being racked 5 guns per rack and 6" racked 3 guns per. Everyone is different but you don't want to use too many guns in the bigger racks.. your back won't like you :)
